Science Towers C & D Additional Floors
Massey University science towers are a group of four buildings. Science towers A, B & C were built from 1967 to 1969, and science tower D was built from 1981 to 1982. The buildings were all constructed from cast-in-place concrete columns, beams and floor slabs. All four towers were four stories high.
By the early 1990's, more space was needed for offices and laboratories, and it was decided the existing building structures could support the construction of a fifth floor. The additions would be made to towers C and D only. The existing concrete roof slab would have a level topping slab applied, and a lightweight structural steel framing system would be added to enclose the new laboratories and offices on the fifth floor.
