Road 1 Motza Bridge
Jerusalem, Israel
Project Description
The $170M Road 1 Motza Bridges consisted of two 800 meter precast segmental bridges with three lanes in each direction. Spans range from 40 to 60 meters and a deck height range of 3 to 25 meters above the valley floor. The bridges were erected in balanced cantilever using a unique overhead gantry which also provided cantilever stability during segment erection.
On the main traffic artery between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, the Motza elevated highway is of significant importance. “The new Jerusalem Route 1 is one of the most important infrastructure projects in Israel, from both a planning perspective and a national perspective, and symbolically,” a spokesperson from contractor Netivei Israel said.
This challenging project was adjacent to religious archaeological sites and the segmental bridge design provided a method for building a structure with no impact to this culturally significant area.
